When you have an efficient and well maintained furnace, your furnace will last longer, perform better, and save you money. Just like your car, your furnace can be a victim of wear and tear. The less wear & tear your furnace gets – the longer your furnace will last you. With that being said, taking care of your furnace will increase its efficiency meaning it won’t have to work as hard to warm your home as it would if it was less efficient. This creates money savings because you are not having to pay as much on your energy bill and you are preserving its life which means you can wait longer to replace it. By following the tips below, you will be helping your furnace run better!
Make Sure Your Filter is Clean
Your furnace filter plays an important role – its purpose is to prevent dust, debris, hair, etc. from clogging your furnace. When your filter has been in place for a while, it fills up with said debris which means your furnace will have to work even harder than it already does to pull air through the dirty filter. This places extra stress on your furnace which is something you want to avoid. All of this can be avoided by frequently changing your furnace filter. Everyone will need to change their filter at different times depending on the number of people in your home, the number of pets, your environment, etc. A good rule of thumb is to check your filter every month to check the cleanliness of it (or lack thereof).
Clear & Clean Your Registers
Much like your filter, your registers need to be clean as well for your furnace to work efficiently. In addition to your registers being cleaned, they also need to be cleared. Make sure all debris is wiped away and any trapped dust in the cover is removed. Ensure that no furniture, plants, curtains, rugs, etc. are blocking the opening of your registers. This will allow your furnace to freely circulate air around your home.
Use a Programmable Thermostat
If you do not yet have a programmable thermostat in your home (or a smart thermostat), you need to really consider investing in one immediately. Your heating and cooling system becomes much more efficient with a programmable thermostat when used properly. They can reduce your monthly utility bills and often pay for themselves in a year or two. They allow you to program your thermostat to different temperatures at different times of the day. So if you program your thermostat correctly, you can give your furnace a major break when you are not home and crank it back up before you arrive. Your furnace isn’t working 24/7 for you and you won’t even notice the difference in your comfort! Get Regular Maintenance Tune Ups
Finally, make sure you are getting a professional to check out your furnace every once in a while (at least once a year) to ensure it is working properly and there are no major issues. One tiny issue can turn into a large one that could even cause a potential breakdown. Be proactive and schedule your routine maintenance tune-ups with your HVAC contractor.
