It’s hard to believe that we have less than a month left of the summer season, where did the time go? However, if you have lived in the Anderson, South Carolina area for a while, you know that just because fall is starting it doesn’t mean that we will have fall temperatures right away. In fact, it might not be until late fall that we start to finally feel relief from the South Carolina heat and humidity. With all of the heat and humidity, it’s important that you are getting the most out of your air conditioner. Since we know the hot and muggy days aren’t going anywhere too soon, it’s not too late to make the necessary changes to increase your AC unit’s efficiency and improve the cool air flow and comfort inside of your home.
Adjust Your Thermostat Wisely
First and foremost, you need to be adjusting your thermostat throughout the day to save money and to increase your air conditioning unit’s efficiency. Secondly, you have to be smart about how you are adjusting your temperature. If you have a smart thermostat or a programmable thermostat, adjusting your temperature is a breeze. For those who don’t, you have to manually change your thermostat every time you want it to change. Regardless of the type of thermostat you are using, you need to be manipulating it in a smart way. If you work a typical 9-5 job, make sure you are cranking the temperature up by at least 2-3 degrees when you are gone and change it back to normal when you arrive home. Your house will thank you and it will cool down back to normal in about 15-30 minutes (depending on the size of your home and your AC unit). This will not only save you money but it will also give your air conditioner a breather because it’s not having to work so hard to cool your home down. This ensures your AC unit’s efficiency and all in all will improve your homes comfort in the short and long run.
Ensure Your Home is Properly Sealed
Insulation is the biggest thing that will keep the cool air inside of your home and the hot air outside during the summertime – proper insulation that is. If you have areas of your home that feel hotter than the rest of your home, you might have leaky insulation. Big spots to check for any leaks in your insulation include windows, doors and your attic(s). If you believe that your home needs an area to be resealed and better insulated, call your local HVAC contractor today or if you are in the Anderson, South Carolina area, give David Taylor Heating & Air a call today at 864-617-1364.
Don’t Add To the Heat
This is something that not a lot of people consider when they are trying to get the most out of their air conditioning system. Most people think that if they aren’t leaving their doors and windows open and they are shutting their blinds, they aren’t creating anymore heat in their home than necessary. Unfortunately, this idea is wrong. Things like your oven, stovetop, washer, dryer, dishwasher, lights, etc. produce heat and add to the temperature in your home. Try to hand-wash your dishes as often as possible in the hot months. Use your washer and dryer at night to avoid the rapid increase in temperature inside your home. Try to grill outside as often as you can and if you must use your stove and oven, do so at night time when it’s a bit cooler outside. This will help your AC unit, wallet and your home out tremendously.
Keep Your Air Vents Clear
Last but not least, make sure you keep your air vents open and clear of any debris and/or home objects such as furniture. More often that we would like, we come into homes with dressers and chairs and dog beds partially and fully covering up air vents in homes. This essentially chokes off the air flow at the vents and increases the pressure in the duct system which in turn, reduces air flow throughout your home. This makes your AC unit work harder to attempt to cool off your home when all you need to do is clear the opening of your air vents.
If you follow these tips, we assure you that you will start to see and feel the benefits immediately. Your AC unit, your family, your pets and your wallet will all thank you for making these tiny adjustments in your daily routine at home.
