Making decisions are hard. Making decisions regarding your home are harder. Making decisions about your heating and air conditioning system (which you likely don’t know much about) are even harder. That’s where “The Heating & Air Guy” comes in. The team at David Taylor Heating & Air is here to help you make those hard decisions regarding your HVAC system. The very first decision, choosing the right HVAC contractor, is quite possibly the hardest. Let’s talk about some tips when it comes to hiring a company that you can trust.
- Know What Is Important To You: When it comes to your home and your heating and air conditioning needs, it’s going to be completely different than your neighbors. No two people have the same exact home and want the same exact things. You know what is most important to you, don’t let anyone else make that decision for you. If you want to go with the cheapest contractor you can find because that is what is most important to you, do it. If you want to go with the highest rated contractor you find because you value that above everything else, do it. Know what you want and are looking for in a contractor and stick to it.
- Ask Friends, Family & Neighbors: Referrals from people you know are extremely important because you can trust these people. If your mom says that company x is a great HVAC company and has always been there for her and her home, you are going to take that to heart and consider using company x. If your neighbor tells you about a bad experience they had with company y, you will most likely not even look into using them. That’s how referrals work but they are worthwhile. Go ahead and ask around, you won’t regret it.
- Read Reviews: Reviews are similar to referrals but not as white and black. Everything you read on the internet isn’t true and there are a lot of grey areas when it comes to reviews. However if you are researching a company and the majority of their reviews are positive and highly rated, the chances are that you can trust them. The same goes with negative reviews – if you’re researching a company and see that the majority of them are poor reviews, you can most likely trust them. There will always be flukes. There will always be customers who are unhappy and customers who are happy just to get a call back. Research reviews but take them with a grain of salt.
- Check License & Certifications: Every state has different licensing requirements however, you want to make sure the contractor you pick is legit. How are their technicians qualified? Do they do any type of training? What are their hiring requirements? Make sure you ask these questions so you know that you’re getting the best and most qualified company.
- Get Multiple Opinions: Don’t just settle on the first contractor that meets your requirements and sounds like they’d be a good fit. Make sure that you’re getting multiple opinions and multiple quotes from different contractors. The more companies you have to compare, the more you find out what you want and don’t want in your contractor.
- Home Evaluations: When you are looking to get a quote from a contractor, do not, I repeat, do not get a quote over the phone. If you do receive a quote over the phone, hang up immediately. There is no possible way that a trustworthy HVAC contractor can give you an accurate quote on your system requirements without ever seeing your home and the actual system. Make sure a home evaluation is involved or that the contractor mentions that one will be needed to get you a more accurate quote.
- Go With Your Gut: Last but not least, go with your gut. At the end of the day, you know what is best for you, your family and your home. If your instincts are telling you that contractor x is the one and contractor y is sketchy, go with x. You have to be comfortable in the decision you make so you can have peace of mind that your home will be comfortable all year long.
